Israel in ‘emergency situation’ over coronavirus resurgence: PM
‘This outbreak will see an increase and a doubling of the number of severe cases,’ Israeli PM Netanyahu said Sunday, adding the surge ‘poses a challenge for Israel and our health system.’
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel is "in an emergency situation" over a rapid resurgence of the coronavirus across the country.
"This outbreak will see an increase and a doubling of the number of severe cases," he told his weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, adding the surge "poses a challenge for Israel and our health system."
Earlier in the day, the parliament's Coronavirus Committee, tasked with approving rapid regulations related to the coronavirus, announced that gatherings in bars, event halls and synagogues will be limited to 50 people starting Monday.
Netanyahu said further steps are needed and expected to be taken in the coming days to halt the spread of the virus and address the economic crisis it has triggered.
At least 755 new cases were confirmed in the past day, bringing the total number of COVID-19 infections in Israel to 29,787, according to figures released by the health ministry.
